Top 5 things to do in Palma de Mallorca

The island of Mallorca has become a popular destination in recent years, particularly for young people looking to enjoy the sun, the Mediterranean Sea and the many bars and nightclubs that line the streets. It’s an affordable destination, which is why it’s so popular. To give you an idea, there are around 956,000 people living on the island of Mallorca, and more than 11.6 million tourists spend a holiday on the island of Mallorca, and more specifically in Palma de Mallorca, the island’s capital. If you’re looking to discover new horizons and a new culture, you’re bound to find Palma de Mallorca a little tiring, given the number of tourists there. On the other hand, it is still possible to visit some very beautiful places, some of which I’ll mention straight away.

1- Discover the impressive Palma de Mallorca Cathedral

Description: When you arrive in Palma de Mallorca, you’ll be intrigued by an architecturally stunning building. It’s Palma de Mallorca Cathedral. And it’s not just any cathedral! It’s the second largest in Spain behind that of Seville. Construction began in 1229 and was completed a century later, in 1346. At the beginning of the 20th century, Antoni Gaudi, the famous Catalan architect who designed the Sagrada Familia, was hired to reconfigure the choir. But that’s not all! Miquel Barcelo, a renowned painter, draughtsman, engraver, sculptor and ceramist from Palma de Mallorca, was commissioned from 2001 to 2006 to create the interior decorations and stained glass windows of the Sant Pere chapel. As you can see, it’s an impressive monument that’s a must-see when you visit the island.

Description: If you like to immerse yourself in the local culture when you visit a country, this is the activity for you. There’s nothing more Spanish than a flamenco show in a tablao, the traditional venue for these performances. It’s a unique opportunity to see this art form listed as an intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO in 2010. As well as watching a show, you’ll have the opportunity to refresh yourself with a drink and even eat some traditional tapas if you wish (optional). Iberian ham, cheese and Cantabrain anchovies are on the menu.
