Annecy is a magnificent town, with an exceptional setting between the lake and the mountains. In winter, the region is transformed into a white paradise of discovery and adventure. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced hiker, you’re bound to find a hike to suit you and your level of ability. In this article, I’m going to introduce you to the 9 best walks to do around Annecy this winter, with practical information, advice and photos. Follow the guide!
1. The Mont Veyrier hike
The Mont Veyrier hike is a classic and not-to-be-missed hike around Annecy. It offers panoramic views of the lake and town, as well as the surrounding peaks. The walk starts at the Col du Pré Vernet, about 15 minutes’ drive from the centre of Annecy. The path climbs steadily through the forest, before leading to a ridge where you can admire the scenery. You can then continue on to Mont Baron, which offers an even more spectacular view. The walk takes around 4 hours, covering a distance of 10 km and with an ascent of 700 metres. This is a medium-level hike, and you’ll need to be well equipped in winter, with snowshoes or crampons.
2. The Tournette hike
The Tournette hike is a sporty and demanding hike, taking in the highest peak in the Bornes massif at 2351 metres. The hike begins at the Chalet de l’Aulp, around 30 minutes’ drive from Annecy. The path first climbs through mountain pastures, then becomes steeper and rockier. You’ll have to negotiate a few passages equipped with cables and ladders before reaching the summit, where a breathtaking panorama awaits you. You’ll be able to see Lake Annecy, Mont Blanc, the Aravis mountains and the Bauges. The hike lasts around 6 hours, covering a distance of 15 km and a difference in altitude of 1,400 metres. It is a difficult hike, requiring a good level of fitness and experience of the mountains. It is not recommended in winter, unless accompanied by a guide.
3. The Angon waterfall hike
The Cascade d’Angon hike is an easy, pleasant walk that will take you past one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the region. The walk starts at the Angon beach car park, about 20 minutes’ drive from Annecy. The path follows the course of the Nant stream, then climbs up the 60-metre-high waterfall. You can enjoy the spectacle of the water flowing over the rock, and admire the lush vegetation that surrounds it. You can then continue on to the Saint-Germain hermitage, which offers a view of the lake. The walk takes around 2 hours, covering a distance of 5 km and with a 300-metre ascent. The walk is easy and accessible to all. It can be done in winter, but beware of icy conditions.
