Spring in bloom in London: the Chelsea Flower Show
The Chelsea Flower Show is a world-famous flower show. And as its name suggests, it’s a real show of colours and scents that you’ll discover at this grandiose event, which has been going on since 1913!
What is the Chelsea Flower Show?
Organised by the Royal Horticulural Society, which is responsible for promoting gardening in England and Europe, the Chelsea Flower Show is one of the biggest horticultural events in the world. Held over five days in May, the event unveils more than 11 hectares of gardens created just for the occasion. The best gardeners are rewarded for their creations.
This remarkable floral exhibition is divided into several sections, each with its own purpose. You’ll discover a garden featuring the most original plants, another showcasing the latest innovations in landscaping, and yet another dedicated to plants that can be planted on a balcony right in the centre of town. The big names in horticulture will be on hand to present their latest scientific discoveries and creations. It’s a very interesting place, revealing everything that can be done today in terms of gardening, but also an inspiring place for those looking to create a garden!
More than 150,000 visitors flock each year to the lush, flower-filled avenues of the Royal Hospital Chelsea estate, in one of London’s most prestigious districts. You’ll even have the chance to take home some of your favourite plants!
Where does the Chelsea Flower Show take place?
The exhibitions take place on the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea, less than 20 minutes’ walk from London Victoria station.
Chelsea is one of the most upmarket areas of the English capital. It is located in West London and is characterised by its beautiful pastel-coloured Georgian and Victorian houses. It’s a quiet, charming area where you’re sure to bump into a celebrity or two, as many of them have settled here, far from the hustle and bustle of central London.
The Royal Hospital Chelsea was built in 1682 and boasts 11 hectares of parkland, ideal for all the plants at the Chelsea Flower Show. The building was originally a hospice for veterans of the United Kingdom. It is still home to more than 300 servicemen and women, but is open to visitors who would like to find out more.
