Royal Chapel

05 chapelle royale poi grand

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Granada, Capital of the Nasrid Kingdom

You’re now standing at the entrance to the Royal Chapel of the cathedral. Construction began in 1506, during the reign of Charles V. The chapel was designed to house the remains of the Catholic Monarchs, Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile, the rulers who led the reconquest of Granada in 1492.

It was the monarchs themselves who requested the chapel’s construction, as they wanted to be buried in the city of Granada, where they achieved their greatest victory over the Muslims. Inside the chapel lie the tombs of this royal couple who played such a defining role in the city’s history.

You’ll also find Isabella’s crown and sceptre, and Ferdinand’s sword. The chapel is built in a Gothic style, more specifically the Isabelline style, and yes, that’s named after Queen Isabella herself.

The Royal Chapel is an essential chapter in Granada’s story. Just look at the façade, you’ll spot the imperial coat of arms of King Charles V, the grandson of the Catholic Monarchs, reminding us of the powerful legacy they left behind.
