Bib-Rambla Square

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Granada, Capital of the Nasrid Kingdom
This large central square is one of the liveliest spots in Granada, only a stone’s throw away from the cathedral.
Lined with bars and restaurants that open their terraces nearly year-round thanks to Granada’s sunny weather, it’s a favourite hangout for both locals and visitors. Many people come here to relax by the Neptune fountain at the centre of the square.
The name Bib-Rambla comes from a gate built by the Nasrids, which marked the city’s entrance during the Middle Ages.
In those days, the square was the site of Muslim festivals. After the Christian reconquest, it became a venue for bullfights, public executions, and town gatherings. It’s the oldest square in the city, and it played an important role during the Nasrid and Christian periods, due to its location near the old mosque, now the cathedral, and the surrounding commercial district.
In the 19th century, the original gate was torn down and the square was expanded, creating an open space where merchants could set up their stalls. Over time, the area filled with flower stands, cafés, and street performers, becoming one of the most vibrant squares in Granada.
If you’re looking to take a break during your visit in a place that’s both lively and steeped in history, this is the perfect spot.
