St. Rupert’s Cathedral
This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Salzburg, Meeting Mozart
Here we are in front of one of Salzburg’s most iconic landmarks, St. Rupert’s Cathedral! This is the city’s most important religious building and one of its oldest. The first cathedral on this site was built way back in 774. But as you’ve probably guessed, that’s not the structure you see today.
Over the centuries, it was struck by lightning in the 9th century, ravaged by fire in the 12th, and underwent constant rebuilding, repairs, and expansions. In 1598, the damage was so extensive that Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau ordered it to be completely demolished. He then commissioned Italian architect Santino Solari to design a brand-new cathedral in the Baroque style, which was constructed between 1614 and 1628.
Yes, it took just 15 years to complete this massive structure, and its marble façade still leaves a strong impression on anyone who visits. Measuring 142 meters in length and rising to 109 meters from its base to the top of the dome, it’s one of the largest buildings in Salzburg. Step inside, and you’ll find a majestic interior rich in Baroque details and artistic treasures, some with more than 1,300 years of history.
The cathedral also houses the tombs of Salzburg’s prince-archbishops, and it was here that Mozart was baptized. And as you enter, you’ll be greeted by four statues representing the apostles Peter and Paul, along with the city’s patron saints, Rupert and Virgil. So now you know the story behind this stunning cathedral, proudly standing on Salzburg’s Domplatz.
