St. Peter’s Cemetery
This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Salzburg, Meeting Mozart
It might be an unusual stop, I’ll admit, but you’re now standing in one of the oldest cemeteries in the world. And beyond its incredible historical value, it’s truly striking in its own unique way. Some of Salzburg’s most notable figures are buried here, including Mozart’s sister, Nannerl, and Santino Solari, the Italian architect behind the construction of Salzburg Cathedral.
The cemetery is beautifully kept, with flowers in bloom and ornate wrought-iron crosses marking nearly every grave. Tucked between St. Peter’s Church, the Gothic St. Margaret’s Chapel, and the rocky cliffs of the Festungsberg, where the fortress stands just above, this is without question one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the entire country.
