The Medina is the heart of Marrakech, it is a must-see of the city. It is so exceptional that it has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site! It was in 1985 that this typically Moroccan district joined the highly coveted list.
After all, the Medina of Marrakech is the largest medina in the whole of Maghreb, and is almost a thousand years old! The site features impressive ruins, fascinating monuments and colourful souks that are guaranteed to charm you with Morocco’s authenticity!
The word Medina is generally used in North African countries to describe the old part of a town. Indeed, this is the old town of Marrakech, founded in the 11th century by the Almoravids. Who exactly were the Almoravids? They were nomadic Berbers who decided to become sedentary from the 11th century onwards, setting out to acquire fertile land and build their empire in both North Africa and Spain. It was Youssef ben Tachfine, head of the dynasty, who founded the city and a large part of Morocco.
The city developed rapidly, passing into the hands of the Almohads who, for several centuries, built houses, mosques and palaces within the city walls. You will be delighted by the authentic atmosphere that awaits you in the oldest part of Marrakech!
