Flavors of Marrakesh
This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Marrakech, The Gate to the South
As you wander through the alleys of the Medina souk, you’ve probably spotted the bright colours of spices and perhaps a few of Marrakech’s culinary specialities. If you haven’t already done so, I can only recommend that you try them! Among other things, you’ll find large stalls selling dried fruit, where you can sample almonds, pistachios, hazelnuts, apricots and, of course, dates.
You can’t leave Marrakech without trying one of the many pastries filled with honey, pistachios, almonds or orange blossom! These range from gazelle horns to baklawas, chebakias, sellous, briwates and nougat… all authentic Moroccan flavours, which you can accompany with a cup of mint tea!
As for the dishes, don’t forget to try the famous Moroccan couscous, tajine and tanjia! Although less well known, they are just as tasty, these are briouates, small fritters filled with beef, lamb, chicken or fish, reminiscent of samosas, or pastillas, pies stuffed with poultry or seafood and traditionally served at weddings and parties of all kinds.
With all these, you’ve got plenty to discover about Moroccan gastronomy, considered to be an art that combines flavours, colours and smells that are sure to please everyone!
