Almoravid Qubba
This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Marrakech, The Gate to the South
The Koubba is the only remaining vestige of Almoravid construction, the people who founded the city of Marrakech. Built between 1120 and 1130, this dome spans more than 9 centuries of history! This explains why it is so much lower than the other buildings.
Back then, the ground was several metres lower than it is today! Nevertheless, the building remains one of the most interesting monuments in Marrakech, thanks to its unique history and its architecture that whisks us back in time. T
he building is in the typical Arab-Andalusian style of the Almoravids, also known as the Andalusian Caliphate style, reminiscent of the domes of some Toledo and Cordoba mosques. For several centuries, it served as a fountain, powered by underground galleries. It was also used by believers as an ablution centre.
Standing 12 metres high, it is adorned with pretty decorations revealing floral motifs and geometric shapes decorating this tower built with Guéliz stone, bricks, straw and lime. A true masterpiece for its time!
