Santa Croce Basilica

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Florence, A world of art
Welcome to the largest Franciscan church in the world, the Santa Croce Basilica! The Franciscans are a group of Catholics that emphasise poverty and humility. They follow Saint Francis of Assisi’s rule from the 13th century. This basilica was built to rival the Dominican church on the other side of Florence, the Santa Maria Novella. Santa Croce has bigger dimensions, stretching 115 meters in length. The first stone of the basilica was laid in 1294, 300 years later, the structure was finally completed. However, its facade wasn’t added until the 19th century. Inside, you’ll see stunning decor and masterpieces by Italy’s greatest artists. You’ll also find the tombs of Galileo, Michelangelo, Dante, and 300 other iconic Italian figures. Quite the pantheon! Severly damaged by lightning, especially it’s roof , in the 16th century, the building was later restored to become one of Florence’s must-see landmarks. But beware—if you visit, you might experience Stendhal Syndrome… This condition is named after the French writer Stendhal. Passionate about art, he was so overwhelmed by the basilica’s beauty, that he felt dizzy and overcome with emotion during his visit. His heart was racing as he left the church, after experiencing what is also known as “Florence Syndrome”.
