This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Alicante, The City of Sunshine

At the foot of Santa Barbara Castle, nestled on the slopes of Mount Benacantil, lies the picturesque Santa Cruz district, often called the Cuna de Alicante, or the cradle of the city. This is where the soul of Alicante lives, in a maze of narrow alleys and winding staircases. The colourful and whitewashed houses are decorated with hanging flower pots and traditional azulejos, blue mosaic tiles prevalent in 14th century Spanish architecture, which became later a status symbol for the new society. As you wander through, you’ll discover little squares, bursts of street art, and a peaceful, authentic side of Alicante life. It’s charming, timeless, and endlessly photogenic. You’re now standing in front of the Santa Cruz Hermitage, an 18th-century chapel where the famous Holy Wednesday processions of Semana Santa begin. From the small viewpoint nearby, you can enjoy a sweeping view over the city centre and the sea. If you look a little higher up behind you, you’ll spot the Torre de la Ampolla, one of the city’s last surviving medieval towers. This is, without doubt, Alicante’s most beautiful neighbourhood. Yet, it still flies under the radar of most tourists. Locals say it was once a hideout for gypsies and pirates who took refuge here centuries ago. Today, it’s yours to explore, so take your time, and soak in the peaceful magic of a place where time seems to have stood still.
