Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Albi, Retracing the history of the Red City
Toulouse, Lavaur, and Albi: these three Occitan cities aren’t just neighbors – they all share a colorful past. Back in the day, they were major players in the woad trade. During the 15th and 16th centuries, Albi rose to prominence as the leader in global woad commerce. With its perfect climate and ideal terrain, the city could produce large quantities – we’re talking a whopping 22 tons per hectare! But that’s not all. Their expertise and unmatched skills in processing woad led to a much higher quality product, and that’s what made them famous across France and the globe. Woad, the so-called “blue gold”, brought prosperity to Albi and immense wealth to certain Albigensian families. To show off their power and riches, these families built themselves luxurious private mansions. There are twenty or so remaining in the city, among them the Hôtel de Saunal. Continue down Saunal Street and see this beauty for yourself – it’s the beautiful red-brick building topped by a tower. It once belonged to Simon de Saunal, a successful merchant who made his fortune selling salt, leather, wool, hats and woad. He was even elected consul four times! It is said that his daughters married into the Reynès family, further solidifying the social status of both lines. Today, this historic landmark is no longer a private residence; it’s been transformed into a museum for all. It’s essentially a grand gallery, showcasing 65 paintings by Raphaël Cordoba, alongside masterpieces by great artists like Leonardo da Vinci, Bruegel, and Van Gogh. To admire these works up close, all you have to do is pay a small fee and join a guided tour.
