Cordeliers Grand Théâtre

Halfway between the old town and the university campus, you’ll find Cordeliers, Albi’s cultural district dating back to the late 1990s. Spread over an area of 3.2 hectares, it is home to a multimedia library, a cinema and, above all, a theater like no other. You can definitely see it from where you’re standing. The Cordeliers Grand Théâtre first opened in 2014, housed in a rather atypical modern building. It took 3 years to build this futuristic structure, which came to replace a former parking lot. The renowned French architect Dominique Perrault envisioned the building as an “inverted cathedral”. You see, the signature brickwork is symbolized here by the bold red hue of the second exterior wall – a nod to Albi’s architectural legacy and its many buildings constructed from red brick. With its two auditoriums, each seating up to 900 people, the Cordeliers Grand Théâtre is the heart of Albi’s modern culture scene.
