The Dog Fountain
This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Bilbao, A Basque City Reborn
Tucked at the entrance of one of Bilbao’s narrowest alleys, the Dog Fountain is one of the Old Town’s most charming curiosities.
Long ago, animals on their way to the market would stop here for a quick drink.
In the 1800s, the site was redesigned in the neoclassical style and turned into a public fountain. Three spouts were added, each in the shape of a lion’s head. Many mistook them for dogs, and from that mix-up came the fountain’s nickname… and the name of the street it stands on.
Today, both locals and visitors still enjoy pausing here for a cool drink, just like their four-legged predecessors all those years ago.
