plaza Bizkaia
This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Bilbao, A Basque City Reborn
Since its reconstruction in 2008, Plaza Bizkaia has become the modern face of Bilbao.
The pergolas and side waterfalls that once defined the square were removed to create a space that’s more open, comfortable, and pedestrian friendly.
As you walk through today, you’re met with a bold, contemporary setting. Rising in front of you is a striking glass building, flowing like a wave. This is the administrative headquarters of the Basque government.
Closer to the ground, you’ll spot three sculptural fins, blending steam, light, and metal. This futuristic garden is the work of Madrid-based architect Lorenzo Fernández Ordóñez. Original, playful, and a little mysterious, Plaza Bizkaia feels like an open-air gallery, where meaning is in the eye of the beholder.
