La plaza Nueva
This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Bilbao, A Basque City Reborn
Plaza Nueva is a key landmark in Bilbao’s historic centre, and has been at the heart of the city’s social life since 1851. When locals aren’t strolling through the surrounding streets, this is where they come to unwind.
Honestly, who could blame them? With bars, cafés, and restaurants tucked beneath 64 neoclassical arches, the squarehas something to offer for every one. Covering 3,400 square metres, Plaza Nueva took more than 65 years to complete, and its lively energy has never faded.
If you’re here on a Sunday, you’ll find a market selling various books, fossils, stamps, and all kinds of handmade crafts. Speaking of markets, it’s worth mentioning the spectacular Santo Tomás Market, which fills the square with traditional Basque products during the Christmas season.
