Barcelona or Bilbao?
Casa Montero is one of Bilbao’s finest examples of Art Nouveau, and the only one in the city originally built as a private residence.
With its ornate façade, leafy motifs, and lavish balconies, it might remind you of a certain famous Catalan architect. If names like La Pedrera or Casa Batlló come to mind, you’re on the right track. The resemblance is so striking that locals have nicknamed it “Casa Gaudí.”
But despite appearances, this masterpiece, now listed as a historic and artistic monument, was designed in 1904 by a French-Spanish duo of architects, not Antoni Gaudí. Before you move on, take a moment to admire the front door on Alameda de Recalde Street.
