Head west of Peyrepertuse and 5km from Saint-Paul-de-Fenouillet to discover the Gorges de Galamus. The gorges stretch for almost 2 km, set against a fabulous backdrop of sheer cliffs. The river Agly meanders between these limestone giants. After a few moments of contemplation, you’ll feel the call of the water. Note that swimming is prohibited, so you’ll have to opt for water-based activities that are just as refreshing. There are pools carved naturally into the rock, limestone slides and a grandiose encounter with nature.

Here you are at the foot of the Canigou massif for a dip in the Saint-Vincent gorges. The gorges are synonymous with a pleasant interlude along the water’s edge. Start with the 1-hour walk to the gorges, from the Vernet-les-Bains antenna. You’ll then reach the Saint-Vincent waterfall. The roaring sound of the water on the rocks will soon put you on the right track. Let’s face it, it’s your first cool dip! Another quarter of an hour’s effort to reach the large cascade des Anglais. There’s something enchanting about the cool mist that envelops this spot. The 7km round trip is accessible to children aged 5 and over. But they still need to be motivated.

The Verdouble is a river that zigzags through the rock between Tautavel and Vingrau. This natural spectacle forms the Gouleyrous gorges. The site is magnificent: a jade basin facing narrow, whitish cliffs. As is often the case, swimming is prohibited here. Nevertheless, it’s a perfect spot for a picnic break and a day of contemplative sunbathing in harmony with the environment.

Sahorre – very close to Vernet-les-Bains – is home to the locals’ favourite watering hole: La Rotja. After 1 km in the direction of Py, a wide, gently green pool of water borders a pleasant picnic area. The river makes its way through the rocks, swirling here and there to transform the cauldrons into natural jacuzzis.

Observe the castles of Cathar country clinging to the top of chiselled ridges. In the Hautes-Corbières, take refuge below the cliffs to cool off a little. As you approach the Château de Peyrepertuse, dominated by the village of Duilhac-sous-Peyrepertuse, you can enjoy the waterfalls of the Moulin de Ribaute. In this idyllic setting, the river Verdouble weaves its way through the rock, filling pretty natural pools surrounded by rushes. There’s something enchanting about this setting. The ambient scent of rosemary and the comings and goings of birds add to the charm of the place. Friendly tip: come in the morning or at the end of the day to avoid the crowds.
